Spy Agency Get Leads on BOU Sh60b Theft

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I  The mystery surrounding the disappearance of sh60b ($17m) in a record 60 seconds from Uganda’s Central Bank has made the heart of many a financial manager twinkle in disbelief.

It seems it’s only the courageous and brainy that can unravel this mystery.

The custodians – Bank of Uganda officials said they were only waiting for a police investigation to help them confirm the whereabouts of the sh60b that was reportedly sucked out of the central bank’s coffers.

Habari Daily can now confirm that security agencies have obtained a few leads that would enable them apprehend the culprits.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a top military official intimated to our reporter that the hackers who siphoned out the finances belong to a group of hackers calling themselves “Waste” who loom around the virtual space waiting for an opportunity to steal. And when they steal, they steal big.

When he caught wind of it President Yoweri Museveni reportedly directed the spy agency which is part of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, and called Defence, Intelligence and Security (DIS), to be in charge of the investigations. This body, which if formerly the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), conducts special intelligence missions related to high profile missions such as armed robberies and terrorism.

This body has since discovered that the theft mission was an insider mission carried out with aid from several Bank of Uganda officials. A number of them have since been summoned and questioned.
