
Ambassodor, Schauer makes his submission at the Friday meeting held at State House Nakasero
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Uganda-German relations are on the rocks, and diplomacy now seems to be the only solution to the impasse.
In an X post published last month, Ugandan military spokesperson Chris Magezi said that Kampala had received credible intelligence reports that the German ambassador had been “actively engaged in subversive activities” in Uganda.
“Following this subversion, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces has with immediate effect suspended all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany,” Magezi said.

The UPDF has been receiving logistical support from Germany, especially in training. Additionally, Ugandan troops participate in an African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, a mission partially funded by the European Union, of which German is part.
It’s against this background President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday, 13th June 2025 met and held a strategic discussion with the Ambassador of Germany to Uganda, Matthias Schauer at State Lodge, Nakasero.
According to a State House press statement issued thereafter, the meeting focused on exploring ways to enhance collaboration in key sectors such as trade, investment, technology, sports development, among others.

“The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership between Uganda and Germany. Museveni emphasized the importance of partnerships based on mutual respect and shared development goals, highlighting Uganda’s commitment to sustainable progress.
Protests at embassy
As the two leaders were meeting, supporters of first son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, were demonstration at the German Embassy in Kololo. The First Son has in several messages on his X handle breathed fire and ordered the German top diplomat to get his hands off Uganda.
They accused Ambassador Matthias Schauer of engaging in “subversive activities,” and termed his actions as undiplomatic and in violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Wearing Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) branded T-shirts emblazoned with Muhoozi’s image, the group, led by PLU director of mobilization Michael Mawanda, marched from the PLU offices in Naguru to the embassy premises along Philip Drive in Kololo.

“The German envoy is colluding with enemies of peace and undermining Uganda’s sovereignty. We are saying enough is enough,” said one youthful protestor, brandishing a plackard reading: “The colonial era ended.”
The protest however, ended peacefully as police cordoned off some roads.
The group, led by PLU’s director for Mobilisation, Mawanda, was unable to access the embassy, which they found closed.
German responds
Germany’s Foreign Ministry had earlier on dismissed Uganda’s accusations of subversive activities, by the German ambassador which prompted suspension of military cooperation with Berlin.
“We dismiss in strong terms accusations that our ambassador to Uganda, Mathias Schauer, is involved in meddling in Uganda’s affairs,” said an official at the German Foreign Ministry.
