Magogo (In white shirt – Center) hands over the MOU FUFA signed with the Rujumba family on construction of Hoima stadium
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Bunyoro Kingdom is in a tug of War with Dr James Rujumba’s family who prefer that the stadium being constructed in the heart of Hoima City be named after their late father.
The kingdom on the other hand prefers the name Kabalega.
Information obtained by Habari Daily indicates that the family of the late Dr Rujumba wishes for the new Hoima Stadium to bear his name, recognizing him as East Africa’s first veterinary doctor.
The family reportedly arrived at this decision based on the fact that they donated 10 acres of the 34 acres of land designated for the stadium, situated in Kyarwiru cell, Hoima East City division.
Currently, this stadium, which is projected to be finished by December this year, is 75% complete. At present, it is referred to as the FUFA-Rujumba Hoima City Stadium.
The final name has yet to be determined, with leaders from Bunyoro advocating for it to be named after Kabalega, a past king of Bunyoro kingdom.
The family provided FUFA with 10 acres of land for the development of the football stadium as a legacy initiative to honor the late Rujumba, and a memorandum of understanding was successfully signed by both parties in 2020.
This land, which is located 3 kilometers along the Hoima-Masindi road, forms part of 150 acres registered under the name of the late Dr Rujumba.
This stadium is included in the government’s plans to establish sports facilities in preparation for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a collaborative effort between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Construction, which commenced last year, and is being undertaken by the Turkish company Summa, has garnered widespread admiration for the rapid progress that has been achieved, which is also timely.
