Eddie Mutwe carried away by prisons’ officers after his bail application was denied
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The election period started on rocky ground for notable supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), after they were denied bail.
Some of these include Edward Ssebuufu alias Eddie Mutwe, Achileo Kivumbi, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, Doreen Kaija, and Sauda Madada.
Damalie Agumasiimwe, the Kawempe Chief Magistrate cited weak sureties and possible interference with investigations.
The members, some of which have stood for elective office, are facing charges of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and related offenses.
Delivering her ruling, the magistrate said the accused could compromise the ongoing investigations if released.
Court further observed that most of the sureties presented did not meet the standard of “substantial sureties.
“For Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi’s their sureties are too young to exert enough influence to ensure their return to court, while for Doreen Kaija, one of the sureties did not qualify. Sauda Madada’s sureties on the other hand, are insubstantial,” reads part of the ruling.
Although Mufumbiro’s sureties included former Nakawa Mayor Ronald Balimwezo, the magistrate ruled that his relationship with the accused was not sufficiently close.
Magistrate Agumasiimwe added that most of the sureties were fellow NUP leaders, raising concerns that they could shield witnesses, many of whom are also affiliated with the party.
The matter was adjourned to October 24, 2025 after state prosecutors said investigations were still ongoing.
