Museveni campaigning in Kwania district early last week
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I State engagements have forced the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, President Yoweri Museveni into adjusting its campaign schedule, postponing three planned rallies in the Lango sub-region.
In a statement issued last evening, Richard Todwong, the NRM Secretary General, notified party chairpersons that the rallies set for Monday, 6th October 2025, in Kole, Lira, and Lira City have been called off.
“Our candidate needed to attend to critical state duties on the set day,” reads part of the statement, giving no further details on the nature of the duties.
He however pointed out that the rally in Oyam on Tuesday will be held as scheduled. “We shall be there in the morning and then in Pakwach district in the afternoon,” he further pointed out.
Todwong appealed for patience and understanding from party supporters and flagbearers.
“We pray that our supporters and flagbearers can understand that our national chairman and presidential candidate is also the president of this country and he had a prior arrangement on Monday and he has to take a day off,” he said.
The postponement disrupts the NRM’s push through the northern regions, in a campaign trail began in Luweero on 30th September, later moving to the Lango sub-region.
Since then, the President has held high-energy rallies in districts including Amolatar, Dokolo, Otuke, and Alebtong.
His message basically revolves around wealth creation, infrastructure development, and leveraging imminent oil revenues to transform the country.
Stiff challenge
Museveni is seeking re-election in a presidential race featuring seven other candidates, three of whom have contested before while four are first timers. His challenger includes Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (National Unity Platform – NUP), Nathan Nandala Mafabi (Forum for Democratic Change – FDC), Maj. Gen (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation -ANT) and Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party – CP).
Others include Mubarak Munyagwa (Common Man’s Party – CMP), Frank Bulira Kabinga (Revolutionary People’s Party – RPP) and Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party – NPP).
After Lango, Museveni will take his campaign to West Nile sub-region.
