HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Police in Kisoro District have launched investigations into the murder of a woman whose body was found under disturbing circumstances, sending shock waves through the local community and raising fresh concerns about safety, particularly during nighttime hours.
According to police, Sylvia Nyirandagije, a resident of Masaka village, Nyakabingo Parish in Kisoro district, died under mysterious circumstances.
The incident was reported by Jackson Nteziyaremye, who alerted authorities after the body was discovered. Officers responded to the scene, documented evidence, and later conveyed the body to the Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death
Preliminary observations by investigators revealed visible injuries on the body, including a piece of cloth tightly tied around the neck, pointing to a possible case of strangulation
Police also noted that the victim’s relatives had not reported her disappearance prior to the discovery, a development that has complicated efforts to trace her last known movements.
Some residents who spoke anonymously described the deceased as a habitual drinker who often returned home late at night. “She used to overdrink and come back home very late,” one resident told reporters, adding that such behavior may have exposed her to danger
Other community members speculated that the woman could have been attacked while intoxicated on her way home, though police cautioned against drawing premature conclusions.
The Kisoro District Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a heinous act that cannot be tolerated in society.
“We condemn this act in the strongest terms possible,” Maate said, noting that active inquiries are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators
He appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators by sharing any information that could assist in solving the crime. “Whoever has information regarding this incident should report to the nearest police station or contact local authorities,” he urged.
The murder comes amid wider concerns about rising violent crime in parts of the Kigezi sub-region, where police have repeatedly emphasized the importance of community policing and timely reporting of suspicious activity.
Security experts note that many crimes occur under the cover of darkness, underscoring the need for vigilance, especially among individuals moving alone at night.
As police await postmortem results and continue to follow leads, the killing has left residents of Kisoro unsettled, with calls for increased patrols, community awareness, and justice for the victim. Authorities say they will release further details as investigations progress.
