F-15 fighter jet
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Iran government has reportedly placed a bounty on the head of a missing American fighter jet crew member, escalating tensions following the downing of a US warplane in its southern region. State-affiliated Iranian media channels have urged citizens to “capture the pilot alive,” offering financial rewards to anyone who can locate and hand over the airman.
In one widely circulated report, Iranian outlets indicated a reward of approximately $66,100 (about Shs231 million), highlighting the high stakes surrounding the incident. The missing crew member, identified as a weapon systems officer, was aboard a F-15 fighter jet that was shot down during operations over southern Iran. While one pilot from the aircraft has reportedly been rescued, the fate of the second crew member remains unknown.
Both United States and Iranian forces are actively searching for the missing airman, raising fears of a dangerous confrontation. Iranian security forces have intensified operations on the ground, while officials continue to call on civilians to assist in locating the individual alive.
The situation is fraught with political and military risk, as capturing a US service member could provide Iran with a significant propaganda advantage. Meanwhile, conflicting narratives have emerged from Iranian authorities. A sub-unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and local officials in Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad province have denied reports that the missing crew member has been captured.
Further complicating matters, Iran claims it has targeted a second American aircraft during the search operation, while also reporting an attack near the Bushehr nuclear power plant that left one person dead.
With uncertainty surrounding the missing airman’s whereabouts, the unfolding developments continue to heighten tensions between the two nations.
Details about the F-15 Eagle
This supersonic aircraft remains one of the most formidable combat aircraft ever built, with its firepower and payload capacity continuing to define modern air superiority.
According to Boeing, the jet is “an all-weather, highly maneuverable tactical fighter designed to permit the Air Force to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat.” Its unmatched record—over 100 air-to-air victories without a single loss—underscores its battlefield dominance.
At the heart of the F-15’s firepower is a mix of speed, payload, and precision weapons. The aircraft is equipped with a 20-mm M-61A1 six-barrel cannon and can carry a wide array of missiles, including AIM-9 Sidewinders and AIM-120 AMRAAMs, as well as precision-guided bombs. Boeing emphasizes that the latest variant, the F-15EX Eagle II, “brings unmatched payload capacity and capability to the fight,” with the ability to carry up to 29,500 pounds of ordnance—far exceeding most modern fighters.
Boeing further notes that the F-15EX is designed with “next-generation radar, survivability systems and advanced weapons integration,” allowing it to perform both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions with equal efficiency. The aircraft’s twin engines, each producing more than 29,000 pounds of thrust, enable speeds of up to Mach 2.5 and rapid response in combat scenarios.
“The F-15EX provides the U.S. Air Force with a cost-effective, highly capable platform that can rapidly integrate new weapons,” Boeing states, highlighting its adaptability in modern warfare.
With its combination of firepower, speed, and versatility, the F-15 Eagle continues to stand as a cornerstone of U.S. air combat strength decades after its introduction.
