HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Jinja City is still coming to terms with the loss of its treasurer, whose death last week has been described as a major blow to the city’s administration.
Alex Kiwanuka, the Principle Revenue Collection Supervisor, passed away on Easter Sunday, of a suspected cardiac arrest aged 50. He has been rushed to Nile International Hospital in Walukuba, Jinja Southern Division, following a stroke.He passed away shortly, leaving behind seven children.
The Jinja City Mayor, Elton Peter Kasolo, paid tribute to the late treasurer, praising his professionalism, integrity, and dedication to public service. The statement noted that he was instrumental in strengthening financial discipline and ensuring prudent management of public resources.
“He served with distinction and commitment, always prioritising accountability and transparency,” he said, adding that his contribution to the city’s development will be long remembered.
Kasolo attributed the city’s rise in revenue collection from Shs 1.5 million in May 2021 when he was recruited to the current Shs 15 billion, to Kiwanuka’s efforts and professionalism.
The deceased, an alumnus of Kiira College, Butiki, was widely respected among colleagues for his diligence and calm approach to duty. Leaders said his guidance played a key role in improving revenue systems and supporting service delivery across the city.
Plans are underway to hold a requiem mass at St Andrew’s Church in Jinja, followed by burial on Wednesday at his ancestral home in Magamaga Town Council , with leaders, civil servants, and residents expected to attend.
Authorities have extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing the late treasurer as a “true public servant” whose legacy will continue to inspire many within and beyond Jinja City.
