HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda will reap big out of decision to grant AFCON visitors 3-months visa free entry, with officials projecting a major economic and tourism windfall ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The announcement was made today by Dennis K. Mugimba, Uganda’s AFCON chairperson, during a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.
He said the visa waiver—covering one month before and one month after the tournament—“places visitors at the centre of Uganda’s AFCON 2027 preparations,” adding that the move is designed to make travel “smoother, safer and more attractive.”
The committee noted that Uganda expects between 500,000 and 650,000 visitors during the course of the tournament, a figure that could significantly boost the economy. “If each visitor spends at least $1,000, Uganda could earn at least $500 million from the event,” the statement read, describing the visa-free policy as a key driver of tourism and investment.
Officials emphasised that the initiative goes beyond easing entry requirements. “Government planning is now heavily focused on improving the overall visitor experience,” the report stated, pointing to ongoing investments in infrastructure and services.
According to an additional statement, the Local Organising Committee committee, funds have been earmarked for “roads, airports, hotels, hospitals, sanitation, ICT systems, electricity lines and tourism promotion,” ensuring the country is ready to host a global audience.
Key projects include upgrades around Mandela National Stadium and the Hoima City Stadium, as well as improvements to hotels in Hoima and Masindi.
The report further highlighted plans to elevate Kabalega Airport to international status and strengthen health facilities to support both fans and teams. “These investments will leave a lasting legacy beyond the tournament,” the committee noted.
Uganda is also pursuing a joint PAMOJA visa arrangement with Kenya and Tanzania to facilitate seamless travel across the three host nations.
With matches scheduled between June 19 and July 18, 2027, officials say preparations are on track. “The two competition stadia and eight training facilities are expected to be ready by January 2027,” the statement confirmed.
Drawing on lessons from previous tournaments, organisers expressed confidence that the visa-free policy will position Uganda as a top destination, unlocking long-term economic and tourism benefits.
Uganda will co-host the tournament with Kenya and Tanzania between June 19-July 18, 2027.
