Nixon Agasirwe was aligned in court on Monday
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Preliminary investigations have revealed that Nixon Agasirwe, a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) bankrolled assassins who executed a suicidal mission that led to the killing of Joan Kagezi Namazzi, the former assistant director of public prosecutions, in 2015.
In Uganda, the penalty for premeditated murder, also known as murder with malice aforethought, is either death or life imprisonment. The specific sentence is determined by the court based on the circumstances of the case.
While the death penalty is a possibility, it is rarely imposed and life imprisonment is more common, especially when aggravating factors like the use of deadly weapons are involved
The key prosecution witness, Daniel Kisekka revealed thse details during an earlier trial session at the International Crimes Division of the High Court. If this is proved beyond reasonable double, Agasirwe, the former commandant of the Police Special Operations Unit, would definitely hang, or face a life sentence.
He was on Monday arraigned before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court, presided over by chief magistrate Esther Nyadoi, and charged with one count of murder. “Agasirwe, who was arrested last month by a joint security team allegedly coordinated Kagezi’s assassination using a Government vehicle,” read the charge sheet in part.
Chief state attorneys Richard Birivumbuka and Joseph Kyomuhendo submitted the charge sheet to the magistrate.
Magistrate Nyadoi informed Agasirwe that he could not take a plea because the charges against him are capital in nature and can only be tried by the High court.
As a result, Agasirwe did not plead guilty to the murder charge. Chief state attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo informed the court that investigations are still ongoing.
The suspect, who was under heavy security guard, was whisked away back to Luzira Maximum Prison for the second time since his arrest.
He will stay on remand until July 8, 2025 when his case will be brought for mention.
