The newly appointed Kampala city Lord Mayor with his wife and another official celebrate the election win
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Kampala Lord Mayor-elect Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has pledged to run the city on integrity, fairness, and strict respect for the law, warning that no one will be shielded by wealth or status during his tenure. Balimwezo won the Kampala Mayoral race with 141,220 votes, defeating incumbent mayor Elias Lukwago (PFF), Beatrice Mao (DP) and 6 others.
Speaking to the media after being declared winner, he said he has remained consistent in public service and will not compromise his values.
“I am speaking before my Almighty Father. I am not corrupt and I will never be corrupt,” Balimwezo said.
He dismissed fears that influential individuals could exploit his leadership to intimidate ordinary citizens.
“For those who think I will be soft or easily compromised, they do not know me,” he said.
“I am very consistent, objective, and serious, and I will give equal opportunities to the rich and the poor.”
Balimwezo said the law would be enforced without discrimination, regardless of social or economic standing.
“The law will bite those who are rich and try to terrorize my people,” he said. “At the same time, it will also apply to the poor who commit offenses.”
The Lord Mayor-elect defeated Erias Lukwago by more than 100,000 votes in the recently concluded mayoral elections. He contested on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket and previously served one term as Member of Parliament for Nakawa East.
Following his victory, many city residents have expressed hope that Balimwezo will address Kampala’s long-standing problems, including poor road infrastructure, flooding due to weak drainage systems, congestion, and overcrowding. Attention now turns to whether the new Lord Mayor will match his strong words with action once he takes office.
