Museveni kicks the first ball to launch the stadium
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Kitara FC recently made history as the first side to win at the newly constructed Hoima City stadium, whose commissioning, held on Wednesday, 24th December, 2025 was capped with an opening football match.
The home team from Hoima District, defeated KCCA FC 1–0, sending fans into celebration.
Isaac Amutuhaire scored the all-important goal that gave Kitara the historic win – as the first football club to win the Hoima City stadium.
He henceforth entered into the football and national history books as the first player to score in the new Hoima stadium. The goal came in the 25th minute, almost laying the match to bed.

Speaking during the commissioning of the stadium, the First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni, urged residents of Bunyoro to take pride in the facility and utilise it responsibly, describing it as both a national asset and a catalyst for regional development.
“Though this is a national asset, it will bring immediate benefits to the Bunyoro community because you host it here,” she said.
She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing a public university for the Bunyoro region, alongside ongoing investments in oil infrastructure and transport.
“Be good stewards of these national assets — the oil wells, this stadium, and the upcoming public university. Let them unite us as a people with a shared homeland,” she noted.
The Hoima city stadium that sits on 34.9 acres of land has been primarily built to host the Afcon 2027. It was launched by President Yoweri Museveni, who officially kicked off the match.
The Stadium was built one year ahead of schedule at a cost of about Shs 490 billion. It features a hybrid grass pitch that meets FIFA and CAF standards.
The wider complex includes among others a 2,000-seat indoor arena, training pitches, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, outdoor courts, a fully equipped gym, offices, media facilities and parking for more than 1,000 vehicles.
Among the dignitaries present were Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, cultural leaders, and thousands of football enthusiasts from across the country.
