Besigye during his day at court
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Tension marked proceedings at the High Court on Wednesday when opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale, appeared to take plea on treason charges.
The State Prosecution, represented by Richard Birivumbumka, had confirmed readiness to begin the trial before Justice Emmanuel Baguma.
However, the session took an unexpected turn when Dr. Besigye raised his hand moments after stepping into the dock, requesting to address the court directly.
Justice Baguma rejected the request, instructing Besigye to channel any concerns through his defense team led by Counsel Martha Karua.
The defense, however, argued that the law does not stop an accused person from personally raising issues in court, even if they are represented by lawyers.
Besigye remained insistent, pushing for an opportunity to be heard. As emotions began to rise in court, Justice Baguma decided to adjourn the hearing, directing that Besigye put his concerns in writing. The court set October 8, 2025, as the date to formally respond after receiving the written submission.
Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, Counsel Karua said the defense team itself was unaware of what Besigye intended to raise.
“We don’t know what his concerns are—whether it’s about health, welfare, or another issue. We shall wait until the 8th when the court reconvenes,” she explained.
The postponement means the highly anticipated treason trial, which had been expected to commence immediately, will now resume next week once Besigye’s concerns are clarified.
