
Brig Gen Paul Muwonge, recently received military equipment from the French on behalf of the UPDF Division Commander
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Brig. Gen. Paul Muwonge has been appointed the new head of the UPDF Mountain Infantry Division by Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Previously, Brigadier Muwonge served as the Deputy Commander of the same division based in Fort Portal, western Uganda.
He takes over from Maj Gen James Birungi, who assumed command of this division in April of this year. Major General James Birungi has now been assigned to the Burundian capital of Bujumbura as Uganda’s Attaché and Defense Advisor in that country.
This role has been held by Brigadier Simon Ochan, who will be returning to the Joint UPDF Services headquarters after completing his tour of duty. Ochan will now be awaiting his next assignment.
Major General Birungi previously served as the Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS) for the Defense Forces until April, while also exchanging roles with General Richard Otto, who previously led the Mountain Infantry Division.
Brig. Gen. Muwonge recently accompanied Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba on an official working trip to Kinshasa, the capital of DRC. He will now be participating in the ongoing Operation Shujaa, which is a joint operation involving Uganda and the FARDC, the armed forces of DRC.
The aim of this operation is to eliminate the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group, a terrorist organization that has inflicted terror in various parts of Eastern DRC and Uganda.
