HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Hollywood has lost one of its most enduring action legends with the passing of Chuck Norris at the age of 86. The veteran martial artist, actor, and cultural icon died peacefully on Thursday, surrounded by his family, according to a statement shared on social media.
His death followed a reported medical emergency in Hawaii, bringing to a close a remarkable life that spanned decades of discipline, fame, and influence.
Born Carlos Ray Norris in 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris rose from humble beginnings to become a global symbol of strength and resilience. Of Irish American and Cherokee descent, he experienced a modest upbringing marked by his parents’ divorce. He later moved with his family to Kansas and eventually to California, where his life would take a decisive turn.
Norris’ journey into greatness began during his service in the United States Air Force in the late 1950s. Stationed in Korea, he discovered martial arts—a discipline that would shape his life’s philosophy. He trained extensively in Tang Soo Do and later developed his own system, the Chuck Norris System, emphasizing not only physical strength but also mental, psychological, and emotional resilience.
After returning to the United States, Norris became a professional karate competitor and quickly rose to prominence, eventually earning the title of world karate champion. His reputation as a skilled martial artist attracted high-profile students, including Steve McQueen, Priscilla Presley, and Bob Barker.
It was McQueen who encouraged Norris to transition into acting—a decision that would redefine his career.
Norris made his unforgettable film debut opposite Bruce Lee in the 1972 martial arts classic The Way of the Dragon. Their iconic fight scene remains one of the most celebrated in martial arts cinema. This breakthrough role opened doors for Norris, leading to a string of action films throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
He became a household name through films such as Missing in Action and The Delta Force, where his stoic demeanor and tough-guy persona resonated with audiences worldwide. His characters often embodied justice, patriotism, and unwavering determination, cementing his legacy as one of Hollywood’s definitive action heroes.

As the film industry evolved, Norris successfully transitioned to television, where he found renewed fame in the hit series Walker, Texas Ranger. In the show, he portrayed Cordell Walker, a principled Texas Ranger fighting crime with a blend of martial arts and moral conviction.
The series ran for eight seasons and earned him a nomination for a TV Guide Award in 1999, introducing him to a new generation of fans.
Beyond the screen, Norris’ influence extended into popular culture in unexpected ways. In the early 2000s, he became the subject of widespread internet memes celebrating his exaggerated toughness—further solidifying his legendary status among younger audiences.
In his later years, Norris remained active in film, notably appearing alongside Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Jean-Claude Van Damme in The Expendables 2. Van Damme paid tribute to Norris, describing him as a respected figure from the early days of their careers.
Despite his tough exterior, Norris was remembered by his family as a deeply loving man. His daughter, Danilee Norris, described him as her lifelong protector, emphasizing his compassion and tenderness. “He may have a warrior exterior, but his heart was so full of love,” she said in a heartfelt tribute.

Tributes pour in
“Deepest condolences on the passing of my friend, Chuck Norris,” says Belgian martial arts star and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The pair starred alongside each other in the 2012 action film The Expendables 2 alongside Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Bruce Willis.
He said in an Instagram post that they knew each other from the early days, and he always respected the man that he was. “My prayers are with his family. He will never be forgotten.”
Danilee Norris, Chuck Norris’ daughter with his second wife Gena O’Kelly said that for the last past 24 years her dad has been her safe person.
“My dad was my protector the moment I was born and as soon as he took me in his arms, I’ve always been his little girl,” she says on Instagram.
She says that her dad “loved so deeply and cared for every single person in his life with so much tenderness”.
“He may have a warrior exterior, but his heart was so full of love”, she says. “To say I am thankful for him being my dad is an understatement.”
