Illegal travel documents
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Security agencies in Soroti City have arrested a man after recovering more than 260 passports and other immigration-related documents from her residence.
According to security officials, the intelligence-led operation was conducted in the morning of February 22, 2026, in Orwadai, Soroti City, following reports that a male adult was involved in the illegal sale of passports and other immigration documents.
The suspect, whose identity has been withheld by security officials for fear of jerpodising investigations, is a resident of Otwadai cell in Soroti City, East Division.
The authorities accused the man of of illegally dealing in passports, Yellow Fever vaccination cards and certificates of good conduct.
Ibrahim Saiga,the Kyoga East Regional Police Commander, said that they are yet to verify the authenticity of the recovered documents with the relevant authorities.
“Preliminary investigations are under way to establish the origin of the recovered documents and identify any possible accomplices involved in the suspected racket.
Saiga confirmed that another suspect managed to flee and is being pursued.
He further noted that they believe the documents were being processed and distributed illegally from the suspect’s home. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is currently being held at Soroti as investigations continue.
“He is currently under police custody as investigations continue,” the source confirmed.
Security agencies have warned members of the public against engaging in fraudulent immigration processes, noting that passports and related documents must only be obtained through official government channels.
High demand for travel documents
Simon Mudeyi, the Internal Affairs Ministry Spokesperson said that the demand for passports which has been rising across both urban and rural areas. has created room for fraud. “This demand is largely driven by increased interest in overseas employment opportunities . This has created room for unscripuloes individuals to exploit desperate job seekers by charging exhorbitant fees for documents they are are not authorised to issue,: he said in an interview today.
He disclosed that more details will be released as investigations progress.
