Mugisha Muntu, the ANT President
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Electoral Commission (EC) has written to Mugisha Muntu, the presidential flag bearer of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), raising concerns over the list of supporters submitted for his nomination in the 2026 general elections.
In a letter dated September 19, 2025, EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama informed Muntu that out of the 98 districts he submitted signatures from, only 48 districts met the required threshold.
“The remaining 50 districts fell short of the required number of supporters, as stipulated under Section 10 (1)(b) and (3) of the Presidential Elections Act,” said the EC boss.
The Commission noted that without rectifying the gaps, Muntu’s nomination requirements remain incomplete. The deadline for presidential nominations is September 24, 2025.
In response, ANT confirmed receiving the EC’s communication but criticized the timing.
“While we acknowledge that verification is part of the nomination process, we strongly disagree with the late communication from the EC—only three days before the nomination deadline,” the party stated.
The party urged supporters to remain steadfast and continue backing their candidate through the process.
This development comes a day after the National Unity Platform (NUP) also clashed with the EC over a similar matter. On September 19, 2025, the Commission rejected part of the signatures submitted by NUP flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), noting that he had only secured verified supporters from 80 districts, short of the minimum requirement.
Apparently both cases highlight the scrutiny the EC is placing on presidential aspirants’ supporter lists which is a crucial requirement before nomination.
The incumbent, President Museveni on his part is set to be nominated on Tuesday next week having fulfilled all the requirements.
