When Bobby Wine and Bebe Cool shook hands during Eddy Kenzo’s concert, many believed that reconciliation is possible
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Singer and Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) president Eddy Kenzo has spoken out on why he has never pushed President Yoweri Museveni to lift the ban stopping Bobi Wine from performing in Uganda.
Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, has been barred from holding concerts in the country for several years. Government officials accused him of using his music platforms to criticize Uganda abroad while still seeking to benefit financially from local shows.
In a recent media interview, Kenzo said it would make no sense for him to plead with the President on behalf of someone who openly uses the stage to challenge his leadership.
“I have never asked or advised President Museveni to allow Bobi Wine back on stage,” Kenzo explained. “How can I tell him to free a man who is working to remove him from power? Bobi Wine uses the stage as his bullet, and on several occasions, he has decampaigned the President. I can’t be that naive.”
The former Firebase star has not held a concert in Uganda for years, with the ban frustrating his music career. While some artists occasionally raise the issue of whether he should perform again, many have remained cautious, fearing political backlash.
Critics argue that Bobi Wine’s own decision to fully dive into politics blurred the line between music and activism, ultimately leading to his lockout from the stage.
