HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Ministry of Education and Sports has dismissed circulating claims that schools across Uganda will reopen earlier than scheduled because of the 2026 General Elections, calling the information false and misleading.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the Ministry clarified that there has been no change to the approved national school calendar and urged the public to ignore unofficial announcements shared on social media.
“The Ministry of Education and Sports has noted the circulation of false and misleading information on social media claiming that all schools in Uganda will reopen on 4th April 2026 due to the General Elections,” the statement reads. “The Ministry clarifies that this information is not true and should be disregarded.”
According to the Ministry, the current school calendar, which was approved on November 24, 2025, remains fully in force. Officials emphasized that any changes to school opening or closing dates can only be communicated through official Ministry platforms.
“There has been no change to the approved school calendar,” the Ministry stated, adding that reopening dates for schools and institutions “remain as provided in the official school calendar issued by the Ministry and accessible on the Ministry website.”
The clarification comes amid growing uncertainty, with some parents and school administrators expressing concern that election-related activities could disrupt the academic schedule. However, the Ministry reassured all stakeholders that learning will proceed as planned.
Headteachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, and students were reminded that all schools must strictly follow the approved calendar. In particular, the Ministry confirmed that Term One of the 2026 academic year will run from Monday, February 2, 2026, to Friday, May 1, 2026.
“All school administrators are directed to adhere firmly to these dates and to ignore unofficial announcements circulated through unverified sources,” the statement added.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda stressed that the Ministry’s website remains the only authoritative reference for school opening and closing dates nationwide.
“The approved schools and institutions across the country,” she said. The Ministry urged the public to remain cautious and rely only on verified information school calendar published on the Ministry website remains the only authoritative reference on school opening and closing dates for all to avoid unnecessary confusion as the election period approaches.
