Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, the former long serving Minister of Education, has been pronounced dead aged 84.
A close family member, who didn’t disclose the cause of death, confirmed that Bitamazire breathed her last on the evening of Wednesday, 14th January 2026.
For decades the former law maker served a Mpigi District Woman MP (2001-2011). She was the Chancellor of the Uganda Management Institute, a public, degree-awarding, tertiary institution of higher learning.

Geraldine in her hey days
She was appointed education minister in 1979, serving in that role for a year. Again she was appointed in the at very role by President Yoweri Museveni from 2005 to 2011.
From 1981 until 1996, Bitamazire was the deputy chairperson of the Teaching Service Commission, and was appointed as Education State Minister in 1999.
Although burial arrangements are yet to be disclosed, it is expected that she might be accorded a State Funeral, most probably after today’s elections outcome has been announced.
