Ofwono Opondo addresses delegates after he was announced as the winner
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Former Uganda Media Centre Executive Director, Ofwono Opondo, has emerged victorious in the ruling party’s Special Interest Group (SIG) delegates’ conference, securing the NRM flag for Older Persons Member of Parliament (Eastern Region) ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The seasoned government spokesperson, widely recognized for his long service as the NRM’s publicist and head of the Uganda Media Centre, will now carry the party’s mantle in the Eastern region category for older persons. His victory positions him as a strong contender in the upcoming parliamentary race.
Ofwono Opondo has been a prominent figure in Uganda’s political and media terrain for over two decades. Known for his outspoken defense of government policies, he rose to national prominence as the deputy spokesperson and later full spokesperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
He was later appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, where he served until 2024. During his tenure, Opondo became one of the most recognizable government communicators, frequently engaging the media and the public on national issues.
The Older Persons Parliamentary slots were introduced to ensure representation of senior citizens in the legislative process. Each of Uganda’s four regions elects a representative for older persons, with the fifth seat reserved for a national female representative.
Opondo’s win in the NRM primaries demonstrates his continued relevance within the ruling party structures. It reflects the trust that delegates from the Eastern region have placed in his leadership.
With the NRM flag secured, Opondo will now focus on the 2026 elections where he hopes to represent older persons in Eastern Uganda at the national level. His extensive political experience, communication background, and established connections within government could give him an edge over his competitors.
If elected, he will be expected to champion policies that protect and empower senior citizens, particularly in areas of healthcare, social security, and participation in national development.
