HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended the newly introduced format for the 2025/2026 StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL) season after sustained opposition from several clubs, led by Vipers SC.
The decision followed consultations with the Uganda Premier League Board, club representatives, and sponsors, after which FUFA’s Executive Committee resolved that the proposed structure under Rule 14:4-12 of the 2025 Competition Rules would not take effect this season.
The new format, initially presented as part of FUFA’s modernization agenda, aimed to restructure the league into phases that would reduce the number of fixtures and intensify competition. However, clubs argued that the reforms were rushed and risked undermining sporting fairness and fan engagement.
Vipers SC, one of the most vocal opponents, insisted that such a significant shift required thorough consultation and gradual rollout. Their resistance sparked wider discontent among other clubs, prompting FUFA to reconsider.
In a statement, the federation said the suspension will “allow stakeholders more time to understand and appreciate the new reforms through sensitisation.” The UPL will therefore continue under the familiar home-and-away format, which has long been the backbone of Uganda’s top-flight football.
The move has been widely welcomed by players, clubs, and fans who viewed the new system as premature. FUFA, however, maintains that reform remains essential and will continue to engage all stakeholders before any future implementation.
