HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Police in Gulu are investigating the death of a 52-year-old woman in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.
Claire Nambooze, a small-scale trader operating in Vanguard Cell, Laroo-Pece Division, was discovered dead inside her home on Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the case was reported to Gulu Central Police Station by her husband, Christopher Oola.
Aswa West regional police spokesperson David Ongom Mudong confirmed that preliminary information suggests Nambooze may have been battling financial difficulties prior to her death.
According to family members, she had taken out loans amounting to about Shs 6 million from four separate financial institutions. Relatives believe the pressure to repay the money could have contributed to emotional distress.
Nambooze ran a modest breakfast stall within her neighbourhood and was described by residents as hardworking and approachable. On the day of the incident, she reportedly left someone managing her business before returning home, where she was later found unresponsive at around 4:00pm.
Local council chairperson Andrew Nyeko said the news has shaken the community, particularly young people who regularly patronized her business.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding her death.
