Hajji Moses Kigongo, the long-serving NRM Vice Chairperson
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Hajji Moses Kigongo, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party vice-chairperson, has vowed to end the political wrangles that have crippled the Sembabule district.
Speaking to journalists recently he vowed to soon sort out the troubles in Sembabule and the district will have new party office bearers.
This followed the party’s electoral commission’s failure to conduct the district party structure elections.
The NRM electoral commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi, earlier warned that his office will be forced to conduct the Sembabule district party elections after the 2026 presidential elections if they fail to agree.
He said the Sembabule NRM party problems are manageable. The party electoral commission will ably sort out the conflicts,” he said.
Godfrey Aine Kaguta alias Sodo, the young brother of President Museveni, who had been nominated unopposed as the NRM district vicechairperson, asked the party electoral commission and other stakeholders to ensure the district party elections are held within the allotted time.
He pointed out that it would only be fair if Sembabule have a representation in the coming national delegates conference at Namboole.
The contestants including Maj. Gen. (rtd) Phinehas Katirima and health state minister (general duties) Anifa Kawooya, who are competing for the position of the NRM district chairperson, failed to agree on the polling date.
Kawooya, who doubles as the Mawogola West MP, protested against the May 30 date set by the party electoral commission for the suspended NRM party district elections, arguing that she needed ample time to prepare.
Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Ssekikubo said it would not be fair to have the elections quickly without the participation of some areas where the party structure polls were pending over some irregularities.
In 2021, a similar stalemate occurred when Sodo and Shartsi Musherure disagreed on who should be the party flag-bearer for Mawogola North. Later, Sodo withdrew in favour of Musherure.
However, Sodo said he would return in the 2026 parliamentary race for Mawogola North.
