Singer John Blaq
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Popular Ugandan artist John Kasadha, aka John Blaq, has opened up about one of the most difficult moments in his music journey—nearly turning to drugs because of the pressure that comes with being an upcoming musician.
In a recent interview, the singer admitted that at the beginning of his career, he struggled with stage fright and rejection from crowds that didn’t know his music. He recalled how tough it felt performing in front of audiences that gave him little attention because he had no hit song at the time.
“When I was still new in the industry, people didn’t know me or my songs. They would just stare, and I felt like I didn’t belong. I almost believed drugs could help me gain confidence,” he noted.
Blaq explained that he came very close to trying substances like marijuana and other stimulants, thinking they would give him courage on stage. However, seeing how badly drugs affected other musicians stopped him from going down that path.
“I saw people lose control, act violently, or even collapse after using drugs. That was not the life I wanted. With God’s help, I chose to work on my confidence and stage performance instead,” he said.
The “Tukwatagane” hitmaker added that learning to master his stage craft became his strength and remains his natural “booster.”
John Blaq’s story is a reminder of the struggles many young artists face in the music industry. While some give in to the pressure and turn to harmful substances, he believes discipline and resilience are the only sure ways to succeed.
