Chris Baryomunsi
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Kasambya County Member of Parliament Daudi Kabanda, the Secretary General of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a blunt challenge to ICT and National Guidance Minister Chris Baryomunsi, telling him to vacate office if he feels unable to cope with the demands of his docket.
Kabanda’s comments come in response to Baryomunsi’s recent public remarks in which he complained that Gen. Muhoozi’s frequent and controversial posts on X have made his role as minister increasingly difficult. While speaking on a local radio station, Baryomunsi maintained that the Chief of Defence Forces’ social media statements do not represent official government policy, placing him in a difficult position as the government’s chief communicator.
The minister’s remarks triggered a fresh wave of exchanges online, with Gen. Muhoozi and PLU figures firing back, turning the disagreement into a full-blown public confrontation.
According to Kabanda, Baryomunsi previously went as far as reporting Gen. Muhoozi to President Museveni, accusing the army chief of frustrating his work. Kabanda argued that if the minister truly feels undermined by the CDF, then stepping aside would be the most responsible option.
Kabanda also questioned Baryomunsi’s political loyalty, alleging that he was once associated with Gen. Mugisha Muntu’s PAFU, a group that openly opposed President Museveni’s leadership. He suggested that Baryomunsi’s current stance is rooted in long-standing disagreements with the ruling establishment.
The PLU secretary general further revisited Baryomunsi’s past controversial statements, including remarks made years ago linking President Museveni and the NRA to the death of former Butaleja Woman MP Cerinah Nebanda, comments that sparked national outrage at the time.
The exchange has continued to escalate, with Gen. Muhoozi publicly declaring that Baryomunsi will not return to cabinet and accusing him of betrayal. Baryomunsi has dismissed the attacks, insisting he is clear-minded and principled, and rejecting claims that he is driven by personal insecurity.
As the verbal sparring intensifies, attention has now shifted to President Yoweri Museveni, whose response is widely expected to determine whether the standoff is contained or allowed to run its course.
