Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Former Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has dismissed as fake a statement circulating on social media suggesting that she is considering leaving the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The message, shared widely on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that Kadaga had expressed disappointment with the conduct of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections, alleging voter bribery, intimidation, and abuse of office. It further suggested that if such practices continued, she and her supporters would be left with “no choice but to walk away” from the NRM.
However, Kadaga has come out strongly to distance herself from the statement, warning the public against being misled. Posting on her verified X page, she clarified:
“Dear Country men and women, I have seen this message circulating. Please note that this is a fake message.”
The development comes in the aftermath of the hotly contested CEC race where Kadaga lost the position of Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) to Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. The election attracted much attention within and outside the party, with observers raising concern about the intense lobbying and competition between the two senior leaders.
Kadaga, who has served the NRM in various capacities for decades, remains one of the most influential figures within the party. Her assurance that she is not behind the circulating message seem to be aimed at calming speculation of an internal rift that could divide the party at a sensitive time.
