Hon Betty Nambooze
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Betty Nambooze, the Member of Parliament for Mukono Municipality has urged Uganda’s opposition leaders to push for a formal, structured dialogue with President Yoweri Museveni.
Nambooze said that it’s time to stop informal talks that have yielded little progress.
While addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Nambooze said that a transparent negotiation process is essential to address Uganda’s major political and economic challenges.
“We cannot rely on secret meetings behind closed doors. Uganda needs a clear and well-organized dialogue process where real national issues are openly discussed,” she stated.
Nambooze who is a senior member of the Democratic Party and long-time critic of the Museveni government, believes that such talks should cover vital topics such as electoral reforms, good governance, national resource sharing, and the country’s worsening economy.
“The dialogue must have a clear agenda, a timeline, and follow-up actions to hold all parties involved accountable,” she pointed out.
The MP’s remarks come at a time when public dissatisfaction over the cost of living, corruption, as well as political suppression continues to rise.
Nambooze, who is currently in Parliament on a NUP ticket, referenced the Democratic Party’s long history of calling for national dialogue, noting that former DP leader Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere championed similar efforts in the past, which yielded nothing.
