HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially declared January 15 and 16, 2026, as public holidays to allow Ugandans to freely take part in the forthcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The declaration was issued through a legal notice in accordance with the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 174). The two days will be observed nationwide as public holidays.
“In accordance with the powers granted to the President under Section 2 (2) of the Public Holidays Act, January 15th and 16th, 2026 are hereby declared public holidays,” the notice reads.
The President explained that the decision is intended to ensure that all eligible citizens are given adequate time and opportunity to participate in the electoral exercise. “This is to enable citizens to participate in the Presidential and Parliamentary elections,” the notice states.
The declaration was signed by President Museveni on January 8, 2026, and issued under the official seal of the Republic of Uganda.
Authorities say the move is aimed at promoting voter participation and ensuring a smooth electoral process across the country.
