Sex workers after they were arrested by Police
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I President Yoweri Museveni has instructed security agencies to stop harassing and arresting sex workers across the country. The directive was relayed by Yiga Kisakyamukama, Senior Presidential Assistant on Monitoring Service Delivery, during an engagement with sex workers from Rubaga Division at New Best Hotel, Busega.
Addressing the group, Kisakyamukama said the President’s message was clear—sex workers should be included in the government’s broader drive for socio-economic transformation.
He urged the women to form a SACCO through which State House will channel financial support. The revolving fund will allow members to borrow at affordable interest rates and build sustainable livelihoods.
The sex workers raised concerns about constant police harassment, accusing officers of arresting both them and their clients, and extorting money for release.
“We work hard to earn, but end up giving our money to police officers in bribes,” one participant lamented.
In response, Kisakyamukama assured them that the President had banned such arrests: “From today onwards, no sex worker should be arrested for doing this job. Any security officer who disobeys this directive will face serious consequences.”
