Negotiations between the two leaders
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has held a meeting with the Ambassador of the United States of America (USA) to Uganda, William W. Popp, to iron out important issues between the two countries.
The meeting, which was held at State Lodge, Nakasero, was also attended by the Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Ramathan Ggoobi, Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. .
According to a statement issued by State House today, the two leaders engaged in fruitful discussions on trade and other bilateral relations.
“This followed Museveni’s recent phone conversation with the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio,” reads part of the statement.
Ramathan Ggoobi led other Ugandan officials in the meeting
The statement was however silent about the topical issues of the day, including the US’s expedition treaty which was recently penned, and has raised concern among human rights advocates, who have deemed it unconstitutional.
Uganda’s relationship with the U.S. is a complex mixture of strong strategic partnerships and significant points of contention, particularly regarding human rights and governance.
While the two nations collaborate on crucial security matters and health initiatives, recent policy differences, especially Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, have led to U.S. sanctions, a termination of trade benefits, and a deterioration in overall relations, though ongoing efforts are made to foster economic and humanitarian cooperation.
