Simon Peter Aleper was the NRM Vice Chairperson for Karamoja region
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The nation mourns the loss of Simon Peter Aleper, the former Member of Parliament for Moroto Municipality and a revered leader of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Aleper, aged 50, met his untimely demise in a tragic road accident on the Iganga-Tirinyi highway in the early hours of yesterday.
Aleper was en route to Kampala to attend a central executive committee meeting at the NRM headquarters on Kyadondo Road when the accident occurred.
According to Emmanuel Dombo, the NRM spokesperson, the collision happened around 1:00 am at Bukoona, involving Aleper’s Toyota V8 and an unidentified vehicle that fled the scene. The police found Aleper’s body in his vehicle with most valuables intact, except for a pistol, indicating the sudden and violent nature of the crash.
The East Busoga region Police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula, confirmed the incident, stating that Aleper was traveling from Mbale when his vehicle was struck head-on.
“Efforts are underway to locate the driver responsible for the accident to aid in the investigation,” he said in an interview with Habari Daily.
Rose Bakitta, the personal assistant to the NRM vice-chairperson in the eastern region, said the body has since been moved to Mulago Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Aleper, who served as the MP for Moroto Municipality from 2016 to 2021, was remembered in Parliament for his diligent service to the country. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and Speaker Anita Among both expressed their deep condolences, highlighting the significant loss to the nation, the NRM, and the Karamoja sub-region.
Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, acknowledging Aleper’s contributions and calling for improved road safety measures.
Ismail Kiirya, the acting Democratic Party spokesperson, also expressed condolences, underscoring the tragedy of the incident.
The NRM, in a statement by Secretary General Richard Todwong, expressed shock and sadness over Aleper’s death, extending their condolences to President Yoweri Museveni, Aleper’s family, and the people of Karamoja
