Rubongoya presents signatures at the EC
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The National Unity Platform (NUP) has proved its worth by mobilising supporters from all over the country to endorse Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine to enable him stand for president in 2026.
According to the law, aspiring candidates shall submit lists for at least 98 Districts for which they have collected a minimum of one hundred signatures. Whereas it says that districts with less 100 signatures shall not be accepted, it stipulates that various variable shall be verified, including the voter registration number (Personal Identification Number), names of the registered voter supporting the nomination, physical Addresses of the registered voters and existence of signature of the registered voter.
It was upon this background that the Electoral Commission (EC) told NUP that it was calling signatories to confirm their support.
NUP however protested, saying that the process was a form of intimidation by government security agencies.
On Friday 19th September the EC, through a letter, informed NUP that they followed short of the required number of signatures by more than 18 districts.
The supporters on the behest of the party president heeded to the urgent call from the party to its members to show up at the party offices in Makerere Kavule and provide signatures.
“Whoever is a voter and is possession of a national ID should show up at our offices and provide their signature,” Boby Wine urged supporters.
David Lewis Rubongoya, the party’s Secretary General said that following the call, hundreds of people poured into their offices at Makerere Kavule to provide signatures for the presidential nomination of their president.
“We got so many people coming here from different districts, including from districts we did not invite. That tells you that this is not a mission for a person but for the people,” he said.
Rubongoya said that as we speak, they have got excess signatures and are ready to present then to the EC come Monday next week. The deadline for submitting signatures is Tuesday, 23rd September.
