National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters at Bwaise
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has issued an urgent security alert to party leaders and supporters, warning of what he described as renewed abductions and detentions targeting opposition activists ahead of the elections.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Kyagulanyi claimed that a security unit known as Crime Intelligence, allegedly led by Christopher Ddamulira, has activated an operation aimed at arresting and detaining NUP leaders and pro-change activists, particularly in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, and surrounding districts.
“We have credible information that a criminal operation of mass abductions and enforced disappearances has been activated,” Kyagulanyi said.
According to the statement, similar operations are also targeting activists in other urban areas across the country, and several NUP members had already been picked up by the time the alert was issued. Kyagulanyi alleged that operatives have been divided into groups, each tasked with arresting multiple party leaders and activists.
He advised party leaders to take precautionary measures, including disabling live location sharing on phones, avoiding predictable routines, and remaining vigilant for suspicious individuals or vehicles around their homes.
“Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is,” he cautioned.
Kyagulanyi also warned supporters to be careful about sharing sensitive information, especially concerning election activities, and urged families and friends not to disclose the whereabouts of party leaders without proper verification.
Despite the alleged threats, the NUP leader called on supporters to remain firm and continue mobilising for the elections.
“The regime will target leaders, but they cannot kill us all. They cannot arrest us all,” he said.
He further urged Ugandans not to wait for instructions from party leaders, encouraging citizens to take personal responsibility during the electoral process.
“If our polling agents are arrested, immediately become the polling agent. Even if one leader is picked up — even if it is me — let that not dampen our spirits,” Kyagulanyi stated.
The statement comes amid heightened political activity as the country moves closer to polling day, with opposition groups repeatedly raising concerns over the safety of their members and the conduct of security agencies.
