HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Musician-turned-politician, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, has dismissed the long-running debate that groups him, Jose Chameleone, and Bebe Cool as Uganda’s “Big Three.” Instead, he has urged Ugandans to respect music legends who came before them.
Speaking during rehearsals for his brother Dax Vibez, ahead of the upcoming Ugandan Fest show in London where he will perform alongside Nubian Li, Bobi Wine told the local media that he does not see himself as bigger than the many artists who shaped Uganda’s music scene.
“I think it is selfish to think that Ugandan music started with just us,” Bobi Wine explained. “We grew up seeing some artists who also learnt from others. Nothing is more powerful on this earth than staying humble because with this, you will get all the respect.”
He pointed to icons such as Herman Basudde, Phily Lutaaya, and Paul Kafeero as true giants of Ugandan music. To him, the idea of elevating only three contemporary stars erases the contribution of those who paved the way.
For Bobi Wine, authenticity matters more than recognition. “Music is not limited to only those you call the big three. I do not want to be big. I want to be real, and you should call me the real one,” he added.
Despite being away from the stage for long due to politics, Bobi Wine remains one of Uganda’s most followed artists. He believes his past songs still connect deeply with fans and promised a strong comeback once the “barriers” to his musical freedom are removed.
“The moment they take away the barriers from me, I will be back bigger than ever before. I have never changed,” he said.
