Sauda Madada
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Sauda Madada, the Kampala Central Woman Lord Councillor aspirant is still under police custody in Wandegeya following her arrest at the border town of Busia, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has said.
According to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Madada was intercepted by police on Tuesday as she tried to cross into Kenya.
“We’ve been informed that our sister Sauda Madada has been picked up by police at Busia. She was told her file is at Wandegeya Police Station where she will be transferred,” Rubongoya said.
Madada, a strong supporter of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was nominated last week to contest as an independent candidate. She now joins a growing list of NUP members facing arrests in the run-up to the 2026 elections.
On Monday, NUP deputy spokesperson Alex Mufumbiro was arrested outside Kawempe Magistrate’s Court, while Bobi Wine’s close ally Nubian Li was arrested shortly after his nomination as Nakawa Mayor.
Madada is known as one of the party’s mobilisers and security coordinators, having previously endured several arrests and confrontations with security forces.
Her arrest comes as five other NUP loyalists were charged and remanded to Luzira Prison on allegations of carrying out illegal military drills at the party headquarters in Makerere–Kavule earlier this year. Prosecution claims they engaged in unauthorized training and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Security agencies have in recent months warned NUP against what they describe as military-style activities. The party, however, insists that these arrests are part of a wider crackdown meant to intimidate its supporters ahead of the elections.
