Dr Silver Mugisha, the Executive Director National Water and Sewerage Corporation unveiling the ambitious plan at their headquarters in Kampala recently
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Water scarcity in Kampala is set to become a thing of the past, as National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) moves to implement a 3-year water distribution improvement project worth Euros 93m (sh37b), officials have revealed.
Dr Silver Mugisha, the NWSC executive director, said for several months, the body has been facing water availability challenges, mainly due pipe network distribution hydraulic constraints.
“This problem has been common in Kampala, with associated challenges of population growth,” he told reporters on Friday at a press conference held at their head office, where he unveiled a 10-year NWSC Corporate Plan 2024-2027.
He said they expected to root out this problem with the sh37b project, which involves extending water infrastructure/network in places like Mbarara City, Soroti, Moroto and address some water supply bottlenecks around Kampala.
“The funds came through the Uganda Government, acquired as a loan from the French Development agency,” he said.
Mugisha said the project will go a long way towards addressing water related challenges which have cropped up due to inappropriate water pipes.
“Some of these pipes are especially small and can no longer carry the high density of water required in Kampala, especially in areas such as Wakiso, Nansana, Kawempe, Matunga, among others,” he said.
This, said Mugisha, limits water quantities received resulting in occasional water shortages.
NWSC has achieved notable progress towards the targets outlined in SDG 6 by the United Nations. The utility has expanded water coverage and enhanced sanitation infrastructure, showcasing its commitment to ensuring universal access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities by 2030.
