PLU supporters at crossroads as Muhoozi endorses Museveni for 2026 elections

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Musevenison and Chief of Defence Forces

Gen.Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Museveni’s son, and head of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) pressure group, has left his supporters in the cold after endorsing his father in the forthcoming 2026 presidential elections.

“All my millions of supporters, and supporters of PLU, we shall all of us, as one man and without exception support President Museveni in 2026. The future belongs to our mighty God alone, and we shall triumph in His name” Muhoozi stated on his Twitter handle X, formerly Twitter.

Kainerugaba, who is also the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), a position he has held since March 21, 2024, said that he would not contest for the country’s top office currently occupied by his father for nearly four decades.

He henceforth advised his PLU supporters with interests to contest for 2026 Parliamentary seats to subscribe to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) which is a political party.

The 50-year-old heir apparent to the presidency told his over 95,000 X followers that the officials found in the corruption scandals should stop it, as for his father also the Uganda’s President Mzee Gen. Yoweri Museveni will get rid of them.

“As for the corrupt and thieves, Mzee is going to get rid of all of them. We will not accept state capture in Uganda. There will be no Guptas here. Mzee knows that the revolution demands the removal of bad seeds,” Gen. Muhoozi added.

He also lashed out at the foreign media, which he referred to as ‘low-life’ foreign journalists, who were going to write op-eds in their Western papers saying ‘Museveni’s Son a Threat to Ugandan Democracy.’

CDF APPOINTMENT HIJACK

Uncertainty swept through the PLU camp following his appointment to the highest office in March 2024, when Gen Kainerugaba was appointed the highest office in Uganda’s military.

This appointment brought him face to face with the reality that he is a serving soldier and should steer clear of politics.

According to the Political Parties and Organisations Act (Section 16), “A member of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force, the Uganda Prisons Service or a public officer or a traditional or cultural leader or a person employed in a company wholly owned by the government shall not- (a) be a founder, promoter or another member of a political party or organisation; (B) hold office in a political party/organisation; (C) Speak in public or publish anything involving matters of political or organisation controversy; or (d) engage in canvassing support of a political party or organisation or of a candidate standing for public election sponsored by a political party or organisation.”

For about two years, the Gen Kainerugaba and his supporters have traversed the country, celebrating birthday parties and other events, fronting the First Son as their preferred candidate for the 2026 presidential elections.
