Police officers tussle it out with NUP supporters in Mbarara city
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of several supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mbarara District over alleged involvement in acts of violence and obstruction of officers on duty.
According to the police, the operation targets individuals with criminal records linked to incidents such as assaulting officers, destroying government property, and disrupting public order.
“The campaign trail for presidential candidates has largely remained peaceful; however, a few individuals have persistently provoked police and engaged in acts of violence against officers,” the police say in a statement. “Such conduct is unacceptable and will have consequences.”
The statement highlights a series of related incidents reported in different parts of the country. In Busia, suspects traveling in a NUP convoy reportedly assaulted an officer. In Mayuge District, an officer was attacked and had his phone stolen during a campaign event. Similar incidents have been recorded in Kyankwanzi, Kakumiro, Lira, Abim, and Kiruhura districts, where officers and journalists were assaulted and police vehicles vandalized.
In Mbarara, the arrests follow a confrontation between police and the NUP presidential candidate’s convoy in Bwizibwera Town Council. The NUP leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, says police intercepted his team without clear reason.
“We have been intercepted here and police has no reason, much as we have been asking why. Several of our people have been arrested; some have fainted, some have disappeared, and many have been whisked away,” Kyagulanyi says.
SSP Alfred Bangambaki, the Regional Police Commander, confirmed the arrests, saying the detained individuals had committed offences related to public disorder.
The Uganda Police Force reiterates that it remains committed to protecting all candidates during the campaign period but warns that criminal acts will not be tolerated.
“Police action is directed at those who, by choice, repeatedly confront officers and incite violence. We urge all political actors to conduct themselves civilly, respect the law, and maintain peace throughout the campaign period,” the statement adds.
The Mbarara arrests add to a growing list of violent incidents reported along the campaign trail as security agencies call for restraint and compliance with electoral guidelines.
