Coach Mike Hillary Mutebi
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Relief swept through Uganda’s football fraternity on Monday evening after police confirmed that veteran football tactician Mike Hillary Mutebi had been found alive in Kisubi and taken to hospital for medical attention following nearly two days of uncertainty over his whereabouts.
The former Uganda Cranes and Kampala Capital City Authority FC head coach had been reported missing over the weekend after disappearing while returning from a church retreat at Kisubi Beach.
In an update posted on their official X account at about 7:30pm on Monday, the Uganda Police Force said Mutebi had been located and was receiving medical care as doctors assessed his condition.
“Coach Mike Mutebi has been found in Kisubi and is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital, where health personnel are assessing his condition. We thank all those who came forward with information regarding his whereabouts,” police said.
Mutebi had earlier been reported missing after attending a Catholic seminar at Kisubi Beach on Saturday, March 7. According to police, the respected coach was last seen at about 6:30pm as participants prepared to travel back to Kampala.
However, when the group arrived in Kawempe later that evening, Mutebi could not be accounted for, triggering concern among his colleagues and family members.
“Mutebi had attended a Catholic seminar at the beach and was last seen at about 6:30pm as participants prepared to travel back to Kampala. However, upon arrival in Kawempe, he could not be accounted for,” police said in an earlier statement issued by officers at Entebbe Police Station.
Family members soon raised the alarm after efforts to contact him proved futile. His brother, Kenneth Robert Mubiru, said the coach had travelled with caretakers who were part of the church group but had at some point wandered away from them.
“He’s been missing, last seen Saturday about 6:45pm at Kisubi Beach with his fellow church members,” Mubiru said during the search.
The situation was further complicated by the fact that Mutebi does not carry a mobile phone, making it difficult to trace his movements.
His disappearance quickly sparked widespread concern within Uganda’s sports community, with journalists, fans and football officials sharing appeals on social media urging anyone with information to come forward.
Mutebi is widely regarded as one of Uganda’s most influential football coaches. During his tenure at KCCA FC, he led the club to multiple domestic league titles and guided them to continental competitions, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s finest football minds.
Police have not yet disclosed the circumstances under which the veteran coach was found, but his recovery has eased anxiety among supporters and colleagues who had feared the worst.
Further updates on his condition are expected as medical assessments continue.
