Michael Atingi-Ego, the new appointee of BoU
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Michael Atingi-Ego, a seasoned economist with extensive experience in central banking and financial policy, has been appointed as the new Bank of Uganda governor.
According to a statement issued by the deputy presidential press secretary Faruk Kirunda, his name and that of his appointed deputy, Augustus Nuwagaba will be sent to parliament for approval,
Atingi-Ego has served as the Deputy Governor since 2020, following the passing of Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, Uganda’s long-serving central bank chief.
Mutebile, who led the institution for over two decades, passed away in January 2022.
Atingi-Ego previously worked for the central bank as Director for Information Technology, then left and returned in 2020 as deputy governor. He is also a Rotarian.
Professor Nuwagaba, on the other hand, is an economist and international consultant who has served as an associate professor at Makerere University and is the managing consultant at REEV Consult International.
He has advised institutions like the World Bank, UNDP, and various African governments. He holds a PhD from Makerere University and an MBA in Monetary Policy.
A Rotarian and former President of the Rotary Club of Muyenga, he has authored works on urbanization and skills development.
The duo’s appointment is expected to bring continuity and investor confidence in Uganda’s financial sector.
