HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Busiro East Member of Parliament, Medard Lubega Ssegona, has said that the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) made an error by choosing Mathias Walukaaga, the outgoing Nsangi Town Council Mayor as the party’s flag for the forthcoming general elections for Busiro East.
“One stakeholder, the party, has spoken. But the biggest stakeholders — my voters — have not yet expressed dissatisfaction,” he pointed out.
This was after he held a consultative meeting with some of his supporters in Buddo to decide his next move.
NUP’s decision, while not entirely surprising to political observers, sparked conversation given Ssegona’s long-standing influence in Parliament and his reputation as one of the more seasoned legislators within the party. Addressing the matter, Ssegona was quick to emphasize that he harbors no ill feelings toward the party or its leadership.
“I’m not bitter at anyone and deep from the bottom of my heart, I’m very fine. I think I probably didn’t meet the requirements of their assessment because somewhere they didn’t even know how to properly communicate to me what they exactly needed,” he explained.
However, his remarks hinted at some unease with the party’s handling of the process. When asked if he would run as an independent or rally behind the official party choice, Ssegona noted that NUP had not given him any formal role to date, leaving his options open.
“There’s no job that NUP has given me so far,” he said, suggesting that contesting as an independent remained a possibility.
Ssegona also reflected on his political journey, highlighting the role his constituents have played since he first entered Parliament in 2011. He noted that while political parties have been part of his career — first the Democratic Party and later NUP — the ultimate decision-makers are the voters.
