Sweet Coco Gauff a Step Away From Australian Open Victory

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I  After downing Belinda Bencic 5-7 6-2 6-1, World Number 3 Coco Gauff has jetted into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

This makes her a force to contend with in the top rated contest, and will confirm what the bookmakers said that “she would take the trophy home.”

Gauff’s win on Sunday added her to the league of stars such as Monica Seles, Serena Williams, Margaret Court and Steffi Graf, who enjoyed a seamless, perfect starts to their seasons.

But that win was not new to her as she cruises all the way to the top. The 20-year-old from Florida won the 2023 U.S, heralding her into the top league.

He victory in the Rod Laver Arena only cemented her unbeaten start to 2025 and marked her ninth consecutive win to start the year – a milestone she has now reached three times in her career.

 

Breaking Bencic

It was an uphill task breaking Bencic, the 2020 Olympic champion who is playing in her first grand slam since returning from maternity leave.

The 27-year-old player from Switzerland, had rallied her defence and broke Gauff at 4-4 after two marathon rallies at deuce. But Gauff orchestrated a break point of her own in the next game.

With Bencic just two points away from winning the set, the American’s athleticism allowed her to scamper all over the court and fire a backhand winner down the line to seal the break back.

The fighter she is, Gauff cruised all the way to the top, sealing the hard fought game. All as they say, is now history. Coco Gauff will now play the No. 11 seed Paula Badosa on Tuesday for a spot in the semifinals.

Sweet Coco’s bid for a second Grand Slam title might just come to pass more sooner than later.
