Uganda Can Export Products Worth $2.5b Annually, Says UMA’s Dr Rubanda

HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I   Uganda has potential to export products worth $2b once Government streamlines the export system and vouch for local exporters.

Dr Ezra Muhumuza Rubanda, the Uganda Manufacturer’s Association Executive Director said that Uganda has potential to become a major exporter with potential to make $2.5 billion in global exports.

“This projection in respect to what we anticipate in the next 10 years. It is based on the fact that once Government facilitates the medium term strategy, and link it up with the 10-fold growth that government has hatched,” export earnings can spiral in the short run,” he said.

He added that Uganda’s future prospects will ideally be based on agro industrialization.

“We believe that using the two components mentioned above, and combine it with agro-processing, Ugandan manufacturer’s in the SME sector would easily access the global export market,” he said.

Dr Rubanda added that Uganda is also ripe for mineral industrialization.

“In this case, priority should be placed on iron ore, which we think once processing it large amounts, it should be able to give us this 10-fold growth,” he said.

According to Bank of Uganda, the country’s exports increased to $859.20 Million in January from $736 million in December of 2024.

It further said that exports averaged $195.05 million from 1993 until 2025, reaching an all-time high of $940 million in May of 2024, from a record low of $12.39 million in July of 1993.
