Team Uganda celebrates the win
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Uganda’s women’s football team has written a golden chapter in the nation’s sporting history after defeating nine-time champions Mexico 6–0 to claim the 2025 Homeless World Cup title in Oslo, Norway.
The victory, sealed on August 30 at Rådhusplassen, marked Uganda’s maiden triumph at the global event and made the team only the third African nation to lift the women’s crown, joining Kenya (2011) and South Africa.
Making their first return to the competition since 2011, the Ugandan side showcased a remarkable journey. They topped Group B by a single point ahead of Mexico before sweeping through the knockouts — eliminating India in the quarterfinals, Romania in the semifinals, and saving their most commanding performance for the final showdown.
The title-winning squad featured Eva Nagaayi, Josephine Ndagire, Viola Namuddu, Cissy Nakato, Stella Namisango, Jemimah Twesigye, Sharifah Kitali, and Shadia Nambasa. Their collective resilience, flair, and teamwork earned them not only the trophy but also the FIFPRO Fair Play Award, recognizing their sportsmanship.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino was among the first to congratulate Uganda, describing the win as “a momentous achievement that shows the power of football to change lives and unite people.”
The 2025 edition, which marked the 20th Homeless World Cup, attracted 63 teams from 48 countries, bringing together more than 500 players. Uganda’s success added to its rising reputation in women’s football, coming just months after retaining the Africa Women’s Cup crown in Nairobi.
On the men’s side, Egypt also made history by defeating Portugal 4–3 to become the first African winners of the men’s tournament.
For Uganda, however, the triumph in Oslo was more than silverware. It was a story of resilience, unity, and hope — a reminder that football remains a powerful tool for social change.
