HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has paid glowing tribute to the late Maj Gen Deus Karachi Sande, with the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, describing him as an officer of rare character, exceptional dedication, and unwavering accessibility.
Speaking on behalf of the CDF, the Joint Staff Political Commissariat, Maj Gen Henry Masiko, portrayed the fallen general as a dependable leader who balanced professional duty with personal life, earning admiration across all ranks.
“Gen Sande hardly ever switched off his phone; no matter the hour, he was available,” Maj Gen Masiko said, underscoring the late officer’s commitment to service and responsiveness. He added that Sande’s resilience, integrity, and professionalism made him a respected figure among both his superiors and subordinates.
Maj Gen Sande, the former Commander of the UPDF Armoured Division, was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kacuro Village, Kigata Parish, Kyanamira Sub-county, Ndorwa East County, Kabale District, following his death on February 11, 2026, from respiratory complications. The burial ceremony, marked by a 13-gun salute, was defined by solemn tributes celebrating a legacy of sacrifice, loyalty, and national service.
Representing government, the Minister of State for Trade, Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, described Maj Gen Sande as a results-oriented officer whose dedication significantly contributed to the country’s stability. He urged serving soldiers to reflect on the legacies they will leave behind and to emulate Sande’s commitment to peace and professionalism.
“To soldiers, you should learn from Gen Sande’s contributions so that you can be like him or even better,” Gen Mbadi said, challenging officers to pursue excellence and integrity in service.
The late general’s widow, Annet Sande, remembered him as a compassionate family man who extended care beyond his three biological children to many others. “General Sande and I had three children together, but we have many other children under our care,” she said, describing him as a pillar of strength and kindness.
