Sir Mathias Walukaaga (pictured), the renowned Kadongo Kamu singer and mayor of Kyengera Town Council, has launched his political campaign to unseat Ssegona
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The parliamentary seat for Busiro East appears to be becoming increasingly interesting and lively as the 2026 general elections approach.
To set ground for a bloody duel, renowned musician Mathias Walukaaga has shown interest in contesting for the position.
As he submitted his nomination papers at the National Unity Platform offices in Makerere Kavule, Walukaaga mentioned that he decided to take this step due to numerous requests from the local community. Presently, the Tulepuke singer serves as the LCIII mayor of Kyengera Town Council.
“I am Mathias Walukagga, the mayor of Kyengera Town Council and the national coordinator for the National Unity Platform. I am here to submit my nomination papers for the Busiro East parliamentary seat. This decision was influenced by the repeated encouragement from the people in my community,” he noted.
Walukagga is expected to face tough competition from the current MP of the area, Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona, who is also vying to keep his position on the NUP ticket.
Ssegona recently submitted his nomination forms and warned anyone considering to run against him.
“Unless such individuals are mentally impaired or under some form of witchcraft, they must be delusional to think they can take my place in the House,” he reportedly intimated to the media, adding that he is the most qualified candidate and enjoys significant support.
However, Ssegona’s recent comments regarding succeeding Bobi Wine as NUP president after the “agreed two terms” have seemingly upset many supporters and officials from within the party.
Furthermore, he has a close friendship with Mathias Mpuuga, a former NUP member turned opposition MP. There were rumours that Ssegona might switch to Mpuuga’s new Democratic Front, but he dismissed these speculations when he submitted his nomination papers to NUP.
