Uganda Cranes has regrouped for their do-or-die match against Guinea on Friday
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I The president of the Federation of Uganda Football Association, FIFA, Eng Moses Magogo has encouraged Ugandans to adopt a realistic perspective when evaluating the national team in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
The Cranes faced a 3-0 defeat in their opening match against North African powerhouses, Algeria, at the Mandela National Stadium. This outcome left many Ugandans feeling disheartened, prompting a wave of criticism on social media and various media platforms.
In a post on his X page, Magogo expressed that while every Ugandan wishes to see the national team succeed against the Desert Foxes, there is a need for honesty and realism. He raised the question of whether Uganda possesses players competing at the same level as those from Algeria.
The FUFA President emphasized that achieving a level of play comparable to the Algerians will require a united effort from the entire country, not just from the federation. He also asked whether fans advocating for Uganda to outperform Algeria actively support local teams.
“Every well-meaning Ugandan would love to see the @UgandaCranes beat Algeria but we need to be very honest and realistic.
Do we have players playing at the same level like their Algerian counterparts??”
“To get our players playing at the same level it will take our collective effort like as a country not just the federation, @UPL clubs, players, coaches.
As fans who want Uganda to beat Algeria in CHAN, do you watch league games because if you don’t clubs will not get the funds to pay these players and/or keep their best players who are lured away to play in leagues not stronger than us but just for money.”
Do not lose hope
Magogo has also urged Ugandans not to lose hope in their support for the national team, and that there is a good chance that we will defeat Guinea in the next match.
He additionally pointed out that there are three more matches to be played in the group stage, and winning all of them could enable the Cranes to progress to the next round.
He additionally asked Ugandans to cheer for the players wholeheartedly, noting that the team members are also feeling the disappointment from the result. The Cranes are scheduled to face Guinea on August 8 at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, a match that carries significant importance.
Meanwhile, fans have been informed that there will be no physical tickets available as there were for the first match, and all tickets must be purchased online.
