HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Thirteen supporters of the National Unity Platform NUP have been sent on remand by the Masaka Chief Magistrates Court on robbery charges.
Prosecution led by Mariam Njuki alleges that on May 4th 2025, during a football match at Kasana playground in Nyendo, Mukungwe Division, they attacked Detective Constable David Kisame and stole his mobile phone as well as Shss 100,000 cash.
The suspects include Patrcick Kakeeto, Peter Yiga, Reagan Sseremba, Fred Ssebale, Dennis Ssengonzi, Jacob Kayondo, Lawrence Mujuzi, Ezera Kakiga and Ivan Musania. Others include Godfrey Nuwamanya, Patrick Tamale, Godfrey Kiweewa and Emma Mutima.
Appearing before Magistrate Simon Toloko on May 8th, they were charged with aggravated robbery and causing grievous harm to a police officer.
During the said soccer game, police intervened and stopped it by firing live bullets and tear gas, dispersing the crowd. They claimed that the organisers were NUP supporters who never obtained clearance to hold the event from relevant authorities.
Magellan Kazibwe, the Defence lawyer to the defendants testified in court that his clients were tourtured while in police custody where they had been detained for four days. He appealed to the authorities to let them access the relevant medical attention.
The case was adjourned to May 20thwhen the defendants will reappear in court in Masaka.
