Shafik Jjingo, aka Fik Gaza, the suspect
HABARI DAILY I Kampala, Uganda I Ugandan artists are doomed. As soon as they gain popularity, a whirlwind of sorts sweeps them sweeps them off their feet and drags them into the dungeon of hell, once someone commented.
When one looks closely at the story of Artiste Shafik Jjingo, popularly known as Fik Gaza, they will accept the fact that very few local artists survive this whirlwind.
Renowned for his high-energy club hits and flashy stage performances, the artist is now rotting in jail, for allegedly masterminding a robbery ring that trails and ambushes people and robs them of big sums of money in broad daylight.
According to an official of the Uganda Police, Fik Gaza’s arrest was in response to a botched robbery on February 24 in which he and his
henchmen allegedly attacked a businessman identified as Julius Otieno near a primary school in Luwafu.
“We tracked him and landed on him at his home in Luwafu Zone, Makindye Division in Kampala. Now it’s high time he answered to his crimes,” said the officer on condition of anonymity, adding that if luck is not on his side and found guilty on all counts, he risks spending up to 30 years behind bars.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson identified the three other suspects linked to Fik Gaza as David Mutuba alias Mavin Gaza, Najibu Magoola and Charles Zziwa aka Mzungu.
How it all started
It is alleged that Fik Gaza’s gang of amateur robbers first knocked their victim only identified as Otieno off his motorcycle using their own vehicle
Onyango further says that after knocking him down, they shouted ‘thief’ to mislead onlookers. They then pounced on him and robbed his phone and bag containing Shs10 million before fleeing on motorcycles.
Says Onyango: “Bodaboda riders at a nearby stage became suspicious when they noticed that the alleged ‘thief’ was well-dressed and unmasked. Some recognized Fik Gaza among the attackers.”
He further reported that they later helped the victim get to Katwe Police Station, where a case was opened.
“Our officers immediately launched investigations and reconstructed the crime scene, which ultimately led to Fil Gaza’s arrest.”
